This course is designed to focus on teaching the proper and safe use of grader equipment and its related operations. The course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills in operating a grader effectively and efficiently, while also emphasizing the importance of following safe work practices to minimize accidents and injuries on the job site. Topics covered may include equipment maintenance, operator techniques, site preparation, earthworks, and traffic control. Instructional contact-time must be a minimum of 8 hours.

This course will offer participants a detailed understanding in various segments, which are not limited to:

  1. Introduction: Overview of the importance of safe operations for grader operators, the potential hazards and risks associated with operating a grader
  2. Pre-operational Inspection and MaintenanceThe importance of conducting a pre-operational inspection of the grader, how to identify and report any maintenance issues or defects, proper maintenance procedures for the grader
  3. Load Chart and Weight Limitations: Understanding the load chart and weight limitations of the grader, how to determine the weight of a load and ensure it is within the limits of the grader, the consequences of exceeding the weight limitations of the grader
  4. Grader Operation and Movement: The proper techniques for operating the grader and moving it around the job site, how to safely and efficiently level and grade surfaces with the grader, understanding the limitations of the grader's reach and capacity
  5. Signals and Communication: The importance of clear and effective communication when operating a grader, the standard hand signals used to communicate with other operators and ground personnel, how to properly use a radio or other communication device when operating the grader
  6. Safety Procedures and Emergency Preparedness: Standard operating procedures for safe work practices when operating a grader, how to develop and implement safety procedures, emergency preparedness and response planning for situations such as power failure, equipment failure, or accidents.
  7. OSHA Regulations and Compliance: Overview of OSHA regulations specific to grader operation,how to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, such as OSHA's Excavations standard,training on OSHA regulations and compliance
  8. Site Assessment and Planning: How to properly assess a job site and identify any potential hazards, techniques for planning and organizing a job to ensure the safe operation of the grader, the importance of monitoring weather conditions and adjusting operations accordingly.
  9. Accident Investigation and Reporting: Techniques for conducting accident investigations involving a grader, how to report accidents and incidents involving a grader, how to identify and correct accident causes specifically related to grader operations
  10. Conclusion: Recap of the importance of safe operations for grader operators, the role of the operator and employer incommoding safety when operating a grader, the benefits of a safe and healthy work environment when operating a grader.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
