This course is designed to focus on the transportation of dangerous goods by sea inside cargo transport units (CTUs).  The safe transportation of this type of cargo relies upon the correct packing, securing and labelling of both packages and the CTUs and there can be wide-ranging implications at any point along the journey from manufacturer to customer, including the sea voyage itself if procedures are not followed correctly. The course is aimed at packers, stevedores, freight forwarders, hauliers, ship operators and masters and those involved with unpacking CTUs. It offers practical guidance and advice as opposed to a detailed interpretation of the law.  Instructional contact-time must be a minimum of 8 hours.

This course will offer participants a detailed understanding in various segments, which are not limited to:

Introduction to Understanding Dangerous Goods in Cargo Transport Units: Overview of regulations and standards for the transportation of dangerous goods, importance of safety and compliance in the transportation of dangerous goods, risks and hazards associated with the transportation of dangerous goods.
  2. Dangerous Goods Classification and Identification: Understanding the different classes of dangerous goods and their properties, identifying dangerous goods and understanding their hazards, familiarizing with the labeling, packaging, and documentation requirements for dangerous goods.
  3. Safety Measures for Cargo Transport Units: Understanding the requirements for the safe transportation of dangerous goods in cargo transport units, implementing safety measures such as proper packaging, ventilation, and fire protection, conducting regular inspections and maintenance of cargo transport units.
  4. Emergency Response and Spill Containment: Developing emergency response plans for dangerous goods spills, understanding the requirements for spill containment and cleanup, training employees on emergency response procedures and spill containment.
  5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Fire Safety: Understanding the requirements for PPE when handling and transporting dangerous goods, familiarizing with fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and fire alarms, training employees on the use of PPE and fire safety equipment.
  6. Safety Management: Understanding the role of safety management in the transportation of dangerous goods, assessing the effectiveness of safety programs, implementing strategies to improve safety programs.
  7. Inspection and Auditing: Understanding the importance of regular inspections and audits of cargo transport units, identifying and addressing potential hazards during inspections, Implementing an inspection and audit schedule for cargo transport units.
  8. Conclusion: Review of key concepts and best practices for understanding dangerous goods in cargo transport units, importance of ongoing commitment to safety and compliance with regulations, resources for further information and support.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
