This course is designed for occupational hygienists, occupational health professionals and managers who are considering setting up and/or managing a biological monitoring programme for chemical exposure in the workplace. It may also be helpful to employee health and safety representatives.It gives practical advice on setting up a programme, how to protect employees’ rights, what the law says, the role and use of biological monitoring guidance values and contains an Appendix about the technical aspects of biological monitoring. Instructional contact-time must be a minimum of 8 hours.

  1. Introduction to Biological Monitoring in Workplaces: Overview of biological monitoring in the workplace, importance of biological monitoring in identifying and controlling workplace hazards, types of biological monitoring and their applications in various industries.
  2. Biological Monitoring Methods: Understanding the principles of different biological monitoring methods, familiarizing with methods such as air sampling, biological sampling, and biomonitoring, implementing appropriate biological monitoring methods for different hazards.
  3. Risk Assessment: Identifying and assessing potential biological hazards in the workplace, evaluating the likelihood and impact of identified hazards, implementing risk control measures.
  4. Sample Collection and Analysis: Understanding the requirements for sample collection and analysis, familiarizing with sample collection and analysis methods,  implementing appropriate sample collection and analysis methods.
  5. Communication and Coordination: Understanding the importance of effective communication and coordination in biological monitoring, implementing a communication plan for biological monitoring,  coordinating with relevant parties such as laboratory and other organizations.
  6. Record Keeping and Reporting: developing a system for record keeping and reporting of biological monitoring results, understanding the requirements for record keeping and reporting,  training employees on record keeping and reporting procedures.
  7. Interpretation of Results: Understanding the principles of interpreting biological monitoring results,  identifying and addressing potential hazards based on results, reviewing and updating biological monitoring plans and procedures.
  8. Case Studies and Real-world examples: Understanding the application of biological monitoring in different settings, analyzing case studies of successful and unsuccessful biological monitoring, identifying best practices and lessons learned from real-world examples.
  9. Conclusion: Review of key concepts and best practices for biological monitoring in workplaces, importance of ongoing commitment to safety and compliance with regulations, resources for further information and support.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
